Nestled at 1,884 meters (6,181 ft), Lake Naivasha holds the distinction of being the highest altitude lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley. Its existence is a geological marvel, born from a combination of volcanic rock and sedimentary deposits from a much larger ancient lake.
The lake is primarily fed by the perennial Malewa and Gilgil rivers. While it has no visible outlet, its surprisingly fresh water suggests a hidden underground outflow. Covering 139 km², the lake is fringed by a vast 64 km² swamp, whose size fluctuates with the seasons. It is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 6 meters, though it plunges to 30 meters at Crescent Island.
Historically, Njorowa Gorge served as the lake’s outlet; today, it stands high above the water level and forms the dramatic entrance to Hell’s Gate National Park. The bustling town of Naivasha rests on the lake’s northeastern shore, serving as a gateway for visitors.
