Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the world’s second-largest freshwater lake by surface area, is a colossal inland sea nestled in the heart of the continent. Named by explorer John Hanning Speke after Queen Victoria in 1858, this great lake is a vital ecological and economic hub for East Africa.

While surprisingly shallow for its size, with an average depth of 40 meters, its vast surface area of over 68,800 km² is primarily filled by rainfall and a network of streams, most notably the Kagera River. It is famously the primary source of the mighty White Nile River, which begins its long journey north from the lake’s shores in Jinja, Uganda.

The lake is shared by three nations—Tanzania (49%), Uganda (45%), and Kenya (6%)—offering a stunning, island-dotted coastline of over 7,000 km. Its unique ecosystem supports vibrant fishing communities and is home to a dazzling array of birdlife, making it a fascinating, off-the-beaten-path destination for travelers.
