Nestled in northern Tanzania, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder. This iconic caldera forms a key part of the vast Serengeti ecosystem, stretching towards the legendary Serengeti plains to the northwest. To the east, the landscape is framed by the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro and the bustling safari hubs of Arusha and Moshi.
The Crater’s modern history as a protected area began in the 1950s, spurred by the groundbreaking ecological work of Dr. Bernhard Grzimek and his son. Their research led to the establishment of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) in 1959, a pioneering model of “multiple land use.” Under the management of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, this unique agreement allows for the coexistence of wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism, and traditional Maasai pastoralism.
